Working out with P90X

Yes, I am one of the people that decided I needed to get into better shape. I am not overweight, and I walk all day at my job in retail. I thought I was in great shape, but figured a little organized workout would push me over the top. Besides, that mid 40's belly was starting to appear. So, P90X, here I come!

I talked to a lot of people that had done the program, watched commercials and listened to Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic tell about their experiences with it on ESPN. I am built more like Mike Greenberg, so I thought I could handle this workout just fine. I started doing some light workouts before it arrived with some pushups, squats and crunches, just to make sure I could handle it. I picked out a long weekend to start it and on Saturday morning I began.

Whew! Day one was rough. The first workout was pushups and pullups over and over again. I do have a pull up bar for the doorway, but realized that I couldn't do one where I go all the way down. I could do the down part, but going back up to that bar was not going to happen. The pushups were much easier, until it came to the "diamond" pushups half way through the workout. I was already exhausted but when I had to put my fingers together under my chest (forming the diamond) I couldn't even support myself. I decided to stop there, have a protein shake and take a shower. I went back later in the day and made it to the same place before wearing out.

Day two was Plyometrics. I thought this would be easier because of all the walking I do at work. Well it wasn't. Let's just say I was on the floor looking up at my water bottle after I moved the chair out of the way following the second round of swing kicks. 25 minutes isn't 60 but I decided to stop. I went back later in the day and tried it again. I made it to about the same place in the workout.

Am I failing at this? Absolutely not! I am proud of the fact that I have exercised with an intense workout program. My body is sore, but those aches are just replacing the ones that I had before from when I had to go up a ladder or carry something heavy for a customer. It's a trade off I am willing to make. I figure if I did the 90 days, one hour each day I wouldn't be able to stop there. It's a lifestyle choice and I am committed to making it work. I have changed my diet and am not fooling myself about never having pizza or beer again. I just know that it won't impact me the way it has been for years having been the main staple of an average diet. Pizza, lasagna, greasy burgers, fried foods.... I have replaced them with chicken, fish (I make a great baked Tilapia), fresh fruits and vegetables and juices. I am not eating "diet" food, just making different choices. I feel better mentally because I know I am doing something healthy. I won't groan when weeding the garden this summer and already it's easier to put on my socks in the morning!

Do you think you are up to it? All you need is the right state of mind. You have to want to make the change. The rest (aches, sore muscles, crawling up from the floor after the workout) is the easy part!

Hey, I am proud of my 15 push ups.

Hey Scott,

I just noticed this post while looking for Julie. I noticed her in the Fitness Magazine contest. I was wondering if SHE did P90X or thought about it...or becoming a coach, like me, for the company! Then, I saw YOUR post. I'm guessing you ordered through ESPN, and I'm not sure if they assigned you a coach or not. Have you stuck with it? If so, how are you doing? If you don't have a coach and got stuck, I'd love to help out. My story/transformation can be found on my website: www.malwo.com

If you're interested in joining my team as a customer, I'd love to help you if you don't already have a coach. If you'd like to join as a coach, I'd love to show you some info about that.

:) Cheryl Spalter (I'm on Facebook too and love meeting new people)!!
